McNamee On The Comeback Trail

Coventry City defender David McNamee is finally back in training. The right back has had a number of hamstring injuries over the last two years and is now hoping that he can get a contract extension at the Sky Blues.

Said McNamee to the CT: "The last two seasons have been an absolute nightmare. "I seem to go on a wee run in the team and then make one small sprint and something goes, so I feel I have been particularly unlucky and it has been a big let-down for both me and the fans.

"It is always nice to know you are appreciated but I am desperate to prove my fitness and really show the supporters what I can do because personally I believe I am one of the best right-backs in the league when I get going.

"My target now is to get out on the training field and show the manager that I am fit enough to earn a contract extension, and the sooner I can do that the better. It is perhaps asking a bit too much to be involved in a game between now and the end of the season, particularly given the situation we are in - and the last thing I want is for it to go again because the stats say that if you come back too early there is a 70-80 per cent chance that it will recur."

City boss Chris Coleman said: "I explained to David that I like him as a player but it is all down to his fitness really and we have got to see if he can come back and maintain his level of fitness and performance for the first team because the only worry for us is that injury in his hamstring that keeps holding him back. But his ability and quality is not in doubt.

"Nowadays the physios and doctors can do a lot and it has got to be pretty bad to have a longstanding problem. It might always be there but these things can often be managed, but we have to see with David whether he is going to come back and be OK because we could certainly do with that sort of quality, that's for sure."
