Iain Dowie Forum part 1

Tonight, at approximately 7.45pm in the E.ON suite, a full house of some 300 supporters and staff gave Iain Dowie and Tim Flowers a standing ovation as they were presented to those present by Paul Fletcher MBE.

It was somewhat difficult to hear all the questions from the floor that were asked, so apologies to those questioners if what follows isn't exactly what was asked, but hopefully the summary of responses covers the main points.

Paul Fletcher MBE kicked the evening off by asking Iain to say why he chose to take on the role of manager of Coventry City Football Club.

Iain's response was that he was very privileged to be manager and that this was an exciting opportunity for him, and that the infrastructure of the club and the Arena was definitely part of his thinking in why he chose to join. He stated that he feels that he can achieve his ambitions at the club and that the city is a footballing one.

He also paid tribute to Mal Brannigan for being instrumental in getting him to the club, a fact later confirmed in a private conversation with Paul Fletcher who confirmed just how close Coventry were to not getting Iain to the club, and that the first meeting between them was at 7.30am!

Paul's next question, before taking over the role of co-ordinating questions from the floor, to Iain what the secret was to getting the best out of players.

ID - get to know the players, have them onside with what I want to achieve, believe in them and motivate them by finding out what makes them tick. Work with them as people as well as players, and to unite the club from the top to the bottom.

Floor - why do championship sides struggle to get the ball into the box from throw-ins?

ID - it is an asset that certainly needs to be worked on.

Floor - Is it true that Michael Hughes will join on loan from Crystal Palace?

ID - "I think I'll try to stay away from Crystal Palace!" - This brought good about good laughter from the floor.

Floor - What is your type of player?

ID - Pace is a key element of the modern game as is creativity. Was most impressed with the players reaction to what Iain and Tim have done so far, and Iain said he'd seen huge desire in the players so far.

Iain said that of course he wants to win away at Norwich at the weekend but the away form hasn't been the greatest, and in response to a question about setting targets he didn't want to put any such target out for league position.

He wants to fill the Arena by both getting the right results and also by playing attractive football as he feels that the Arena can be a very intimidating place as it sits right on top of the players out on the pitch.

"of course good performances such as against Southampton help but a few good results would also help too", and that he prefers his sides to play an open and expansive game to get the ball into the goalmouth area.
