Former Coventry City striker Leon McKenzie has announced his retirement frrom boxing.

McKenzie was stopped by Cello Renna in the ninth round last night at York Hall and had to go to hospital as a precaution.

Today, McKenzie released the following statement: ''Thank you boxing but it's time. One love. ❤️ I'd like to thank my manager @stephenggoodwin @kevinjcampion & team, my family who have been by my side taking the punches with me, not just in the ring but through life.

''This is so hard to do but speaking to my hero dad, and loved ones, I have to be honest with myself and everyone. The last few fights my body has bailed on me and I guess 40 years of age crept up just like that. As much as my mind and heart want to continue boxing unfortunately my body won't allow me, which leaves me no choice but to retire.

''On Saturday I gave my all and left it all in the ring exhaustion got me. I truly hope boxing respects me now as I respect the sport.

''Dad I love you I thank you for fighting with me. I hope everyone understands but I know my body and its had enough. I will continue my fight in life and continue my journey in other ways in which I can change #mentalhealth health issues and inspire in other ways to help people. #Godbless#football#boxing ❤️''
