England Women's team are out of the Women's World Cup after a 4-3 defeat on penalties after a 1-1 draw

In Leverkusen, for this opening Quarter-Final in the Women's World Cup, England had not beaten France for 37 years and knew that they had to get a result.

Former Coventry City Girls player Karen Carney kept her place in the team whilst former Coventry City Ladies defender Laura Bassett was on then bench for Hope Powell's team.

The French had the better of the play of a first half which failed to produce a goal.

A goal did come and it went to England when Jill Scott got the ball on her right foot in the 59th minute and sent a dipping shot into the net from the edge of the area.

With Powell making three changes to the England team, France pilled on the pressure and in the 88th minute, they levelled through a Bussaglia strike which hit Barnsley's right and post and then went in off the left to send the match into extra time.

There were no goals in extra time and a gutsy England display meant that the game went to penalties.

France went first and Bardsley saved the first spot kick diving to her right. Kelly Smith then scored. Buzzaglia scored for France and Karen Carney scored to put England 2-1 up. France scored again and Casey Stoney scored to put England back in front. France scored for a third time but Rafferty missed meaning that it was now 3-3 with a kick each remaining.

France scored, leaving England needing to score. but England's number five Faye White struck the bar and England were out.
