Former Coventry City defender Louis Carey has been released by Bristol City.

Carey, now 37, has spent most of his career at Ashton Gate apart from a six month spell at Coventry where he played for Peter Reid's side before announcing he was home-sick and returning back to Bristol City.

Carey went to on make the record amount of appearances for the Robins of 646 and speaking about him, Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill said:  "With Louis, we've had a good chat and it's tough to be the one to end his Bristol City career.

"I'm delighted he got the all-time appearance record. That was always going to happen - I couldn't let it go. For his tremendous years of service, he fully deserves that accolade and I can't see it ever being broken."
