Former City Boss Dies

Former Coventry City manager Noel Cantwell died today from Cancaer aged 72. A player with Manchester United who skippered his side to the 1963 FA Cup Final, Noel also went on to the captain the Republic Of Ireland.

Nominated by Jimmy Hill to succeed him, Cantwell became City manager in 1967 and went on to become the only manager ever to have of a City side side in a competitive European match. City qualified for Europe in the 69/70 season and Cantwell was in charge of the games v Trakia Plovdiv and Bayern Munich which City won 75% of.

He left in 1972 to move to Peterbrough with Joe Mercer and then Gordon Milne taking over at Highfield Road and worked for the FA in recent times.

Jimmy Hill told the club website: "It's tempting to remember Noel for his special talent as a player and as a manager. "There's no doubt that those who worked with him and for him would be happy to do that. "However, away from football, he was a delightful person; considerate, helpful, likeable and full of fun. "We will remember his friendship and the service he gave to our Football Club, as well as the pleasure he gave to those fortunate enough to have known him."
