Elliott To Take Over

Coventry City will have a new acting chairman in the morning. Coventry kid Joe Elliott will take over from Geoffrey Robinson MP as the club battle for their very existence.

Robinson who has written off money owed to him by Coventry City, came onto the City board in the mid 1990's. Always controversial, the MP for Coventry North West faced bankrupcy when one of his businesses collapsed.

He initially invested in City in a racehorse type venture which meant he took a cut of players being sold on and his biggest payback was the sale of Robbie Keane to Inter Milan which saved him from financial ruin and prevented the loss of his role as a Member Of Parliament.

He was around during the Bryan Richardson years when the club racked up debts close to £60m and took over Coventry City as Acting Chairman in January 2004 when Mike McGinnity stepped down due to ill health.

At an EGM in June,he was given the right to have the club's stake in the Arena which had been sold to the Alan Higgs Trust for £6.5m, as way of payment for monies he loaned the club.

His decision to stand down as Acting Chairman of Coventry City Holdings Limited, will protect him if the club go to the wall.

Joe Elliott, is in his 52nd year as a City supporter. He plumped in over one million into the club and was shirt sponsor of the youth team and the first team. Since retiring and selling his car accessory business, he has worked unpaid for the Sky Blues on average sixty hours a week and is involved in a number of the club's activities including the Diamond Club.

Mr Elliott is also a director of the Alan Higgs Centre and the Coventry Transport Museum.
