McGoldrick seems set to move when his loan expires after Tuesday's home game with Shrewsbury Town whilst talks are still going on about bringing James Bailey back on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Baker told the Coventry Telegraph; "I spoke to David last week and he said he wanted to stay and that something could have been done but obviously something has gone on with the clubs which is out of Coventry's hands.
"His agent is obviously getting involved and what will be, will be, but we can't determine our whole season on him staying or going. "It would be nice for him to stay and play alongside Leon Clarke but players go all the time in football, and if he does go then we'll just have to adapt
."Leon is coming in and he's done well against us this season and is a good player. He's a big strong lad and hopefully he can do well because I think he would be a good replacement.
"He's a different type of player because David is really tricky and difficult to mark and Clarkey seems more of a target man who will hold it up well. The formation we have been playing I think you will get a lot of runners off him.
"If David stays that's better for us but if he goes it's good that the club have already acted on that and not waited to bring people in in January.
"But no matter who you bring in it is always going to be difficult because David's on fire and he's our main striker, so it's tough for whoever comes in.
"He's quality and been such a big part of this team. When you have got him in your team you know he's going to score goals and even when he had an off day in front of goal like on Wednesday he still popped up with a great finish at the end.
"You can see by the way the fans were singing that they all love him and want him to stay, and the players feel the same.
"I am hopeful that the club can get something sorted because we want to kick on in the second half of the season. We also want the likes of James Bailey, who has been fantastic since he's come in, to stay.
"We are a close-knit squad and we have been per-forming really well, so the most important thing is that stick together whatever happens."
