Former Coventry City striker Cody McDonald scored twice for Gillingham tonight in their Johnstones Paint Trophy Southern Section Area Final First leg defeat against Bristol City.
McDonald gave The Gills a sixth minute lead but Matt Smith scored a hat-trick with goals in the 18th,27th and 50th minute.
McDonald scored again in the 70th minute but Smith who is on loan from Fulham, delighted the 239 travelling Bristol City fans with a stunning goal in the 77th minute.
