WATFORD YOUTH 1-0 COVENTRY CITY YOUTH BY KEV MONKS

City Youth went out of the FA Youth Cup to a late goal at Watford.

With Virgin trains thankfully running on time and the one back was even fifteen minutes early - well worth the £32,I was able to get to Vicarage Road in plenty of time and avoid their version of the village idiot by hiding in the guest lounge.

Having lost 3-1 to Watford on Saturday,Academy boss Steve Ogrizovic changed his team around and used Paul McCrink in the midfield holding role.

City started brightly winning a third minute free kick,Liam Davis swung it in,Junior Osbourne's header only went as far as Andy Gooding. The son of former Sky Blue Ray got in a six yard header which Hornets skipped Andy Chapman headed off his own goal line for a corner.

In the eight minute,Ben Mackey did well to beat the offside trap but could not beat Watford keeper Reece Kirk who saved with his feet. Six minutes later,Kirk did enough to put off Gary O'Toole whose pace took him past the Watford defence.

City's keeper and skipper Jonny Tuffey had not had much to do but in the 15th minute,he bravely dived at the feet of Joel Grant to smother the ball.

City countered immediately winning a corner. Gooding took the kick, found McCrink who played it back to him before blasting wide.

Gooding and left back Ryan Lynch were working well together and in the 31st minute, the pair combined for Lynch to get past his marker only to see his cross kicked away.

Two minutes later, Watford banged the ball forward for Grant on the edge of the area to get in a low drive which Tuffey dived to his left to pounce on.

Tuffey then saved from an Al Bangura free kick before Mackey sent a flick header two feet past the far post from a Gooding free kick.

With five minutes of the first half remaining, Jonny Tuffey required treatment as he dived in to block an Al Bangura close range effort.

The Northern Irish international could do nothing as Bangura's half volley sailed over the bar from the edge of the area.

In the last minute of stoppage time,a Coventry corner taken by Gooding was headed off the line by Leigh Harrington and fell for McCrink to blast over.

Watford made a tactical change at the interval with substitute Jordan Parkes helping to close down the midfield.

They won two corners before Kyle Matthews was cautioned by referee Steven Cook for protesting about a Liam Davis tackle which won them a free kick after 64 minutes.

City were finding it increasingly difficult to create chances but three minutes later Kirk did well to save a Gooding effort from an acute angle.

With ten minutes left,a Toumani Diagouraga shot forced Tuffey to push the ball away for a corner.

The 50 or so City supporters in a crowd of around 500 and just as they were thinking that the game was going into extra time,Watford booked a fourth round home tie against Newcastle or Blackburn.

Liam Davis conceded a free kick some thirty yards out, and when the ball came in Junior Osborne headed though a crowded penalty area and into the net.

The goal totally deflated the Sky Blues who had Tim Partridge booked late on for a foul on Harrington.

Davis curled a free kick round the far post in the last minute but it was not to be and Watford went through.
