One of Coventry City's 1987 FA Cup winning heroes Dave Bennett has spoken about his belief that after ten years of mediocrity in the Championship, Coventry City and their fans have finally got something to look forward to.
Bennett, who scored the equaliser in the cup final and supplied the pass for that memorable Houchen diving header, played in an exciting attacking Coventry side in the mid 1980's. He also scored a memorable winner in extra time in the semi final against Leeds as well supplying the pass, after some typical Bennett magic, for Micky Gynn to score a late equaliser which took the game into extra time.
He joined Coventry from Cardiff in 1983, leaving in 1989 after a couple of injury plagued seasons following the glory year of 1987. Bennett and Cyrille Regis made up one of the most potent strike partnerships the club has ever had and one of the most exciting partnerships of the time.
Bennett, who now works for BBC Radio Coventry as match summariser and pundit, said to the CT: "The changes that Aidy Boothroyd has made have made us a stronger, better team."
"He's brought in a lot of discipline, in more ways than one, like in the way they train and conduct themselves as well as on the park. He wants certain things, like everybody to be fitter than they currently are, but then he's an ambitious person."
"We're competing more and the league table doesn't lie. In a nutshell, over the last 10 years, since they came down from the Premier League, they've been more in the bottom half than they have the top half."
"Since the changes we're pushing for a play-off place, which is where Coventry should be. It's nice to be looking up for a change rather than behind us."
