Warwickshire County Cricket Club made a good start on the opening day of their first County Championship game of the new season.

Somerset batted first at Edgbaston had lost Suppiah in the second over when he was caught by Clarke off the bowling of Chris Wright after making four runs.

The visitors added ten runs but then lost two wickets in the space of two balls when Marcus Trescothick was caught by Clarke to give a wicket to Keith Barker who then bowled James Hildreth with his very next ball.

With play interupted due to rain and bad light, Craig Kieswetter moved the score on to 41 before he was Wright's second victim, being caught by Darren Maddy after making 20.

Wright got his third wicket four runs later trapping Compton lbw and leaving Somerset on 44-5.

Jos Buttler and Peter Trego sparked a mini revival adding thirty nine runs in a spell which again saw the players forced to seek the sanctuary of the plush Edgbaston stands due to another shower.

However, Rikki Clarke mopped them both up with Buttler going for 18 and Trego for 27 from 25 balls.

Barker had Adam Dibble run out for a single and after some resistance from Vernon Philander who top-scored with 38, hitting two sixes and three fours before he was caught by Varun Chopra off the bowling of Darren Maddyin a fifty partnership with Dockrell (not out 13), Somerset were deep in trouble at 142-9.

Kirby was the last man to go, when he was caught by Maddy to give Chris Wright figures of 4-47 and see Somerset all out for 147 in 39.5 overs.

In reply, Warwicks made 4-0 before rain forced them off with 51 overs still left to be bowled. Play resumed at 4.45pm and Chopra and Ian Westwood had moved the score on to 19 when the former Captain was trapped lbw with Philander.

Will Porterfield came in but with the score on 44, he was out for seven after being caught behind by Kieswetter off the bowling of Dibble.

Jim Troughton came to the crease and like Porterfield added only seven before Dibble bowled him with a ball that kept low.

Darren Maddy (24 not out) and Varun Chopra (40 not out) took the score on to 111-3 at stumps.
