Thomas De Gendt has won the fourth stage of the Volta a Catalunya.

Etixx Quick Step's Dan Martin was the new race leader and he led the riders out on a 172.2km stage from Bagà to Port Ainé.

The first climb of the day came after only five kilometres and saw Katusha's Rein Taaramae take the first KOM points of the day at Túnel del Cadí.

There soon followed a split in the peloton and Geraint Thomas was in a second group which was 1.40 down on the front group after 19kms.

Out of this front group, there was a break and Gilbert (BMC), Erviti (Movistar), Plaza (Orica), De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Ten Dam (Giant), Durasek (Lampre), Weening, Tcatevich (Katusha) and Ben Swift (Sky) were in it.

Thomas De Gendt took the intermediate sprint after 28kms at Puigcerdà and then the sprint at Bolvir five kilometres later as their lead went out to 6.25 after 49kms.

That lead increased to 10.40 but was at 9.40 when Van der Lijke of Roompot abandoned the race after 84kms.

With 107kms gone Erviti and De Gendt broke away in a move which saw them get more than a minute clear of the others in the lead group.

Peter Weening joined them but with two kilometres left De Gendt went away and took the win in 4.52.04.

Nario Quintana led the group of favourites who have caught up with the escapers home in second place, some 1.08 down with Richie Porte third and Alberto Contador in fourth place. Chris Froome was eighth.

Dan Martin finished tenth but has lost his leader's jersey to Nairo Quintana of Movistar who now leads the race by eight seconds from Alberto Contador.
