Marcel Kittel Wins Volta Ao Algarve Stage Four

Marcel Kittel has won the fourth stage of the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal.

Tony Martin after his superb time trial was in the leader's yellow jersey for this 194km stage from S. Brás de Alportel to Tavira.

It was a stage which saw 173 riders start and Ivan Savitskii (Gazprom-RusVelo), Charles Planet (Novo Nordisk) and Adam Stachowiak (Verva ActiveJet) in the first break.

Adam Stachowiak took the categorty three Picoata climb before the escapers were joined by Guillaume Almeida (RP Boavista).

The four out front got to a maximum of 6.25 ahead which was down to 4.35 after 40.5kms.

Savitskii took the final climb - the category three Barranco do Velho after sixty kilometres and with no more climbs in the stage, it meant that Geraint Thomas of Team Sky remained in the KOM jersey.

With a lead of 2.40, Savitskii took the next sprint after 133.8kms but just over twenty kilometres later, he had been dropped and caught by the peloton with Stachowiak and Planet out in the front.

Adam Stachowiak took the sprint after 170kms but their time on the front was coming to an end and after 185kms they were caught by the peloton to set up the bunch sprint.

Marcel Kittel of Etixx-QuickStep, who has already won one stage in this race, went for it and took the win ahead of Wouter Wippert (Cannondale) and Jens Debusschere (Lotto Soudal).

Tony Martin keep the leader's jersey going into the final stage.
