Twenty kilometres later and the gap was down to 4.30 and the peloton had taken another a minute off the lead with 55kms remaining.

A crash in the middle of the peloton slowed things up but with twenty five kilometres to go, the front group was down to Dani Diaz, German Tivani and Emiliuano Ibarra when Cabrera decided that his work for the day was done.

The three Argentinian riders, including Diaz who won the race last year, pushed on as Adrian Malori was taken away in an ambulance following the earlier crash.

Diaz attacked with three kilometres to go but Tivani brought him back and then went away to win in a sprint in  3.57.39 with Diaz second and Ibarra third.

Elia Viviani led home the peloton some 1.34 down.

Eduardo Sepulveda continues to lead the race from Dayer Quintana by three seconds.
