Diego Rosa Wins Tour Of Basque Country Stage Five

Astana's Diego Rosa has won the fifth stage of the Tour Of The Basque Country.

Wilco Kelderman of LottoNL-Jumbo was the new leader for this 159km stage from Orio to Arrate (Eibar),

This stage of eight climbs got underway with a fourteen man break which was caught after twenty five kilometres of racing and replaced by a eigteen man break which had a lead of 45 seconds after 41kms.

Stefan Denifi of IAM Cycling had taken the first climb of the day but it was Diego Rosa of Astana who took the next two and was ahead of a chasing group by a minute and four by the peloton on the descent of the Karabieta.

Kiryienka of Team Sky and Dan Martin of Etixx Quick Step abandoned as Rosa took the Kampazar climb with a lead of 1.35 which he was able to extend to 2.20.

With 38kms to go, the peloton, now minus Fabio Aru, Jan Bakelants, Jelle Vanandert, Tim Wellens and Simon Yates. caught up to the chasing group on a particularly nasty Izua climb in wet weather, Rosa was first over the climb with a lead of 3.58.

Going into the final ten kilometres and the gao to a third group which included Mikel Landa, Serge Poewels and Simon Clarke stood at 5.43 and 5.53 to the group containing the race leader.

Rosa started on the final Uzarta climb with a lead of over five minutes before Landa's group caught up to Sander and Armee

Contador and Sergio Henao put in an attack with four kilometres to go. However, with 2.2kms to go, they were still 4,15 down.

In came Diega Rosa who got off his bike and lifted it in the air as he won in 4.19.18. Henao and Contador came in 3.15 down followed by Rodriquez and Pinot.

Wilco Kelderman came home 4.14 and it is Sergio Henao who now leads the race going in to the time trial by six seconds from Tinkoff's Alberto Contador.
