Cummings Wins Tour Of Basque Country Third Stage

British rider Steve Cummings has taken the victory on the third stage of the Tour Of The Basque Country.

Mikel Lansa of Team Sky was in the leader's golden jersey for this 194.5km stage from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Lesaka but not in the first break of the day which included Biel Kadri (AG2R), Stefan Denifl (IAM), Domingos Goncalves (Caja Rural), Sam Oomen (Giant-Alpecin) and Daniel Tekelhaimanot (Dimension Data).

With fifteen kilometres raced, this group were 2.05 ahead and soon took their lead out to 5.02.

That was down to three minutes with 47.5kms left and then down to less than a minute as they started on the Alto de Aritxulegi climb.

Oomen and Denifl split the break with an attack with just over 33kms which took their lead back up to over a minute.

The duo kept going over the categoru two Alto de Agina before starting on the category Alto de la Piedad with a lead of eigteen seconds with twelve kilometres remaining. 

Cofidis' Daniel Navarro shot out of the break and passed Oomen and Denifi to take the race lead and get fourteen seconds of a chasing which included Britain's Adam Yates.

Navarro was caught and as they went under the flam rouge, Steve Cummings of Dimension Data put in an attack which no-one could mark and he won in 5.01.57 ahead of Gerrans, Feline, Brambilla and Visconti.

Mikel Landa continues to lead the race.
