Herrada, Zoldi and Danielson attacked with 35 riders behind them making up the peloton.

Herrarda dropped back to the peloton which did not include Pierre Rolland. He was in a second group of about twenty riders on a stage which was a day for the climbers with four major climbs and the last the finish at La Molina.

With less than five kilometres to go, Danielson and Zoidl caught with the race leader now 1.30 behind.

Kiryienka attacked as did Dan Martin and they were followed by Tejay Van Garderen who passed Martin and then Kiryienka.

Alberto Contador attacked with Atapuma and Richie Porte in tow but they could not catch Tejay Van Garderen who won in 5.00.36 ahead of Richie Porte who was three seconds back, with Contador, Martin and Wilco Kelderman, some eight seconds behind the winner.

Bart De Clerq of Lotto Soudal takes over the lead in the race after finishing in 19th place and leads Richie Porte by twenty one seconds.

De Clerq said to his team's press office: "After the fourth stage wearing the leader's jersey in the Tour of Catalonia, was not exactly something I would have expected beforehand.

"In the opening stage, the peloton has misjudged what the lead for the break which I was part of it, but now I find myself in that situation, I will do everything to grab the opportunity with both hands.

"Tthe general classification is not commonplace for me, but in the coming days,  I will be looking for the attacks and who to follow so I can defend the jersey tooth and nail. The condition is already good, because I do not have to fear. "

"Yesterday I was angry at myself because I had fallen into a second group on the descent and therefore had lost precious time, so today I was 100 percent motivated to put that right in the queen stage.

"The climb went well and I could maintain my pace well, even on the climb of 21 kilometres I rode  in tenth to fifteenth position.

"On the final climb we expected breakaways but I had an even pace and in that way I was able to limit the damage to the finish. "
