Spilak Wins Tour Of Romandie Third Stage

Katusha's Simon Spilak won the Tour Of Romandie Third Stage.

A third stage of 180.2kms from Le Bouveret to Aigle had  Wyss, Bobridge, Veelers, Favilli, Vallee, Gautier Malacarne & Grivko in the early break of the day.

Their lead maximumed out at 5.30 but with seventy five kilometres left, this lead group fractured and Gautier and Malacarne went up the road taking a forty one second lead on Wyss and fifty five seconds on Bobridge, Favilli and Grivko as race leader Michael Albasini in his home race dropped off the back of the peloton on a day of snow and scattered showers.

Gautier and Malacarne were caught and onto the Villars sur Olton climb, Medere, Cherel & Armee had a brief spell on the front before Chris Froome took over with 25kms to go as Vincenzo Nibali tried to get up to Mathias Frank who was well behind Simon Spilak of Katusha who went after the 2013 Tour De France winner a kilometre later.

Froome took the King Of The Mountains points for being first over the top of the climb with 16.4kms left  

Froome and Spilak were not to be caught and they went under the flam rouge together.

With six hundred metres to go, Froome kicked but Spilak went with him. and then went off his wheel and won in 5.09.23 with Rui Costa third, fifty seconds back ahead of Fuglsang and Inxhausti.

Spilak now leads the race from Froome by a second.
