Routley Wins Tour Of California Stage 4

Canadian Will Routley of Optum has won the fourth stage of the Amgem Tour Of California.

Sir Bradley Wiggins went into the 168.9km stage from Monterey to Cambria with a twenty four second lead over Rohan Dennis who had won the third stage.

A day of riding down the Pacific coast on Highway One saw Gregory Daniel (Bissell Development Team), Christopher Jones (UnitedHealthcare), Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), Kevin De Masmaeker (Team Novo Nordisk), Matt Cooke (Jamis - Hagens Berman) and King Of The Mountains leader Will Routley (Optum), who took the first climb of the day.

They had a a 3.45 lead with 103.5K to go and were 3.15 ahead with 83kms to go.

Routley took the second set of King Of The Mountains points and took the third climb, to take his tally to 22 points with 25 miles to go.

The peloton was touching speeds of 50 miles per hour in a bid to bring back the six escapers who were working pretty well.

With three kilometres to go, some of the peloton sat back as the six who were a minute and fifty seconds clear, played cat and mouse with each other.

Will Routly went away after De Masmaeker had started the sprint and won the stage ahead in 3.48.37 of Daniel, De Mesmaeker, Jones, Cooke and Clarke.

Just over a minute later, Mark Cavendish won the sprint for seventh place beating Peter Sagan, Matt Goss and Taylor Phinney.

Bradley Wiggins stays in the leadrs jersey for stage five from Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara.
