Movistar's Nairo Quintana won the fourth stage of the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco (Tour Of The Basque Country).

Stage four was a 151km stage from Trapagaran to Eibar (Arrate) and started with several attacks, all of which failed before Peter Velits,  Vorganov, Montaguti, Ratto and Taaramae got away and had a lead of 2.50 with 53kms gone.

In pouring rain, their lead went out to 4.52 with 68kms to go. But with 25kms to go, only Ratto, Velits and Montaguti with a lead of four minutes.

Velits and Montaguti had shed Ratto on the start of the final climb and with six kilometres to go, they had a lead of 33 seconds ahead of Herrada, Spilak and Pieter Weening, all of whom were not far away in time from the race leader Sergio Henao.

Simon Spilak over-took Velits and Montaguti as Carlos Betancur attacked from the peloton.

Weening was swallowed up by a group containing the race leader, Richie Porte and Alberto Contador with 3.6kms to go in front of large crowds.

Spilak was caught with two kilometres to go and seven riders took the descent to the finish.

Samuel Sanchez was leading a chasing group of six riders who were six seconds back as Nairo Quintana sprinted away and won in a time of 3.58.51 with Henao two seconds back. Contador was third with Betancur fourth and Spilak fifth.

Riders started to crash just after the finish line and the red flag came out to slow the riders down on very wet roads.

Team Sky's Sergio Henao continues to lead the race by six seconds from Quintana.
