Nairo Quintana Wins Tirreno-Adriatico Stage Five

Movistar's Nairo Quintana has won Stage Five of the Tirreno-Adriatico.

The Queens Stage of 194km with three classified climbs on a stage from Esanatogla to Terminillo saw Team Sky's Wouter Pouls with a seventeen second lead over Rigoberto Uran.

Maxime Monfort (Lotto Soudal), Michele Scarponi (Astana), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Matteo Monteguti (AG2R), Andriy Grivko (Astana), Paul Voss (Bora-Argon18), Angel Vicioso (Katusha) and Jesus Herrada (Movistar) formed the breakaway and were 7.12 ahead after sixty kilometres after climbing over the Passo Sallegri after 32kms

That lead went out to 7.20 when they went over Le Arette after 72.4kms. 

There was snow and rain on the Terminillo, as the gap came down to three minutes with 25kms to go.

Scarponi had taken the first sprint of the day and the Astana beat Voss to the points for the second sprint.

With the sprints done, the sixteen kilometre climb to finish on the Terminillo where temperatures were minus one degrees, was left.

The seven out front started on the climb which has average gradients of 7.2% with a lead of 2.06 to the blue jersey group of Poels which was about forty riders strong.

An attack split the escapers with Scarponi, De Marchi and Monteguti gaining a small advantage of fifteen seconds.

Going into the final ten kilometres and with Sky sweeping up what was left of the break, Scarponi went away before De Marchi got up to him.

Nairo Quintana of Movistar made his move and went after Scarponi and passed him as Alberto Contador led a group behind him with 3.1kms to go.

Bauke Mollema bridged to Scarponi as Contador was joined by Adam Yates of Orica GreenEdge, as the snow came down.

Quintana had a twenty six second lead over Mollema with 1.1kms left and went on his way on a road which getting more covered in snow by the minute.

Quintana of Movistar kept going and took the win in 5.26.03 with Bauke Mollema second 41 seconds down with Joaquin Rodriquez third with British rider Steve Cummings finishing 1.17 down.

Nairo Quintana leads the race by 39 seconds from Mollema. Adam Yates is sixth with Steve Cummings ninth.
