Meersman Wins Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Second Stage

Gianni Meersman made it two out of two when he won the second stage of the 93rd Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.

Stage two was from Girona, home to many a professional cyclist to Banyoles and the lake where there was six laps to negotiate on this 160.7km stage.

Kaisen, Christian Meier, wearing the white sprinters jersey, Laborie were the first to attack taking a lead of 3.05 which was down to 2.25 inside the final fifty kilometres.

Race leader Gianni Meersman was safely in the peloton as was Carlos Verona, who was wearing the 100th Anniversary of the Tour De France riders jersey.

Meier had taken the first sprint of the day and he took the second with four laps to go, whilst the peloton were 1.46 behind.

With 23ms to go, the gap was down to nineteen seconds with Blanco on the front and three kilometres later, the trio's time at the front was all over.

Speeds at the front of the peloton with ten kilometes to go, were up to 65kmph as Blanco continued to lead the race through Banyoles and take the bell with 9.2kms to go after three hours and thirty seven minutes.

Riders were four wide trying to get to the front. BMC's Steve Cummings on his birthday was involved before Polish Champion Golas tried to attack with two kilometres to go.

Omega Pharma Quick Step's Elstrand went off the front before two Blanco riders took the front as they passed uider the red kite.

Gianni Meersman started the attack with 200ms to go. There was a crash but the winner of the first stage made it two in a row when he came across the line first in a time of 3.48.09 ahead of Daniele Ratto and Brett Lancaster.

Meersman leds the race by sixteen seconds from Alejandro Valverde going into tomorrow's stage in the mountains.
