Omega Pharma Quick Step's Gianni Meersman won the first stage of the Tour Of Romandie.

After Chris Froome had won yesterday's prologue, the Team Sky rider led out the riders on a 176.4km stage from St-Maurice to Renens on the shores of Lake Geneva with six climbs.

Three riders in Brandie, Bravo, who had taken over the King Of The Mountains jersey and Villeux got away and were 1.55 clear with 50kms to go with Malori and Wyss amongst four chasers.

As they arrived in La Chaux, Bravo was out on his own, some eight seconds ahead of the Team Sky led peloton.

The second sprint was on the 20kms to go mark and IAM Cycling's Matthias Brandie took the full quota of points to add to his win in the first sprint after he had caught up and passed Bravo along with FDJ's Jeremy Roy.

The big teams were moving their sprinters up to the front as the escapers were caught with 6.6kms to go.

With no organisation, Manuel Boaro attacked and was brought back by Argos Shimano.

Into the final kilometre, BCM and Adam Blythe was on the front but in a bunch sprint, Omega Pharma Quick Step's Gianni Meersman found the gap to get to the line first in a time of 4.29. 09, beating Nizzolo and Ferrari.

Chris Froome continues to lead Andrew Talansky by six seconds.
