Phillippe Gilbert won the 19th stage of the Vuelta A Espana this afternoon.

An easier day for the riders with no real climbs, stage 19 was a 178.4kms stage from  Peñafiel to La Lastrilla.

The escapers today, only numbered two in  Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural) and Jose Vicente Toribio (Andalucia).

A six and a half minute lead dropped to 4.47 with 81kms remaining.

As we moved into the final twenty kilometres, groups started to form.

With two kilometres to go, Nicholas Roche attacked in a six rider group. A kilometre later and the Irishman who will be riding for Saxo Bank next season, was caught by John Dagenklob, Phillipe Gilbert and Ben Swift.

That left a sprint. Gilbert (pictured below left)went first and was able to get away from the Team Sky rider to take the victory.

Alberto Contodor continues to lead the race.
