Gerrans Takes Volta a Catalunya Stage Six

Orica Green-Edge's Simon Gerrans won the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya.

Stage six was from Almacaelles to Valis, 178.7kms long and saw high speeds of 56kms throughout the day.

Team Sky's Brit Josh Edmundson was in the eight escapers along with Szmyd, Herrada, Silin, Astarloza, Losada, Stortoni, Sorensen and , Navarro who were not allowed to get more than 2.40 clear.

On the Category 2 Alt de Lilla, the escapers were still away but they went over the summit with Losada having a lead of 15 seconds with nine kilometres to go. 

Steve Cummings was working hard for BMC on the front of the peloton and they caught the escapers with less than five to go.

BMC stayed on the front ahead of Cannondale as the race came through town. Simon Gerrans came to the left as the sprint started and timed his performance to take the victory in a time of 3.55.46, beating Gianni Meersman, Samuel Dumoulin, Daniele Ratto and Danilo Wyss.

Race leader Dan Martin who took the first sprint of the day was 13th and leads the race by seventeen seconds from Joaquin Rodriquez with Bradley Wiggins fourth 54 seconds back.
