François Parisien won the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya.

Friday's 156.6km stage was from Rialp to Lleid and saw fifty kilometres covered in the first hour with Lotto's Olivier Kaisen and Cofidis's Tristan Valentin some four minutes clear of the peloton which included race leader Danny Martin of Garmin-Sharp after 64kms.

The duo stayed away until the fifteen kilometres to go mark when they shook hands and were engulfed by the peloton.

Astana's Andrey Kashechkin attacked with six left but was soon caught as was BMC's Marcus Burghardt who had tried to escape two kilometres from the finish.

A bunch sprint was on and Stéphane Poulhies (Cofidis) took the final bend with 300m left in the lead but Agos Shimano who had worked the cut down the break of Kaiser and Valentin, got their Canadian rider in François Parisien to the front and he took the victory in a time of 3.32.02 beating Samuel Dumoulin, Stéphane Poulhies, Daniele Ratto and Danilo Wyss.

Andrew Fenn was sixth and Danny Martin came in ninth and increased his lead over Joaquin Rodriquez to fourteen seconds.
