Debusschere Wins Tirreno-Adriatico Stage One

Belgian Jens Debusschere of Lotto Soudal has won Stage One of the 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico.

The teams met in the local football ground in Camaiore before the start of this 153km stage to Cascina.

Danielo Wyss, Quintero, Castiblanco, Keizer, Zardini and Salerno got straight into a break and after being joined by Konrad, they had a lead of 5.40 after thirty kilometres.

With sixty kilometres to go, they were still 2.25 ahead and 1.45 ahead ten kilometres later.

At speeds of 42.592kmh, only Edoardo Zardini (Bardiani), Cristiano Salerno (Bora-Argon) and Carlos Salerno, were left on the front with 25kms left.

They lasted another ten kilometres before being caught by a peloton which had Fabian Cancellera close to the front.

Matteo Pelucchi crashed out of the race whilst Adam Yates was able to get to the main group after being involved in the crash.

Movistar, Giant Alpecin, MTN Qhubeka and Tinkoff Saxo with Alberto Contador were on the front as was the race leader Adrian Malori going into the final five kilometres.

Mark Cavendish was also up to the fore with a couple of team-mates in Stybar and Mark Renshaw.

MTN Qhubeka had the numbers with 1.5kms left as Cavendish called the shots for his team who wre joined by IAM Cycling.

Under the kite and Edvald Boasson-Hagen led.There was a big crash which took down a number of riders with 200ms to go including Elia Viviani of Team Sky, Sacha Modolo and Niklas Arndt  but it was Jens Debusschere who won in 3.30.18. Peter Sagan was second with Irishman Sam Bennett in third ahead of Porsev, Farrar and Cort Nielsen,

The 25 year Debusschere, the Belgian national champion, said: "That was really hectic. The last five kilometres were really fast. We managed to get on the Quick Step train and I have to thank my team mates who came at the right time for me."

Adriano Malori of Movistar keeps his race lead from Peter Sagan on countback and said: "Today was not so easy. But we stayed out of the crash so it was good. Our target is now with Nairo but I am happy today."
