Dan Martin Wins Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

Dan Martin won the 93rd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya on a day when Thomas De Gendt won the final stage.

Ten riders in Golas,  Kasechkin, Warbasse, Dall'Antonia, Oroz, Van De Walle, Damuseau, Kroon, Keizer and Domagalski.got away on the final 122.2km stage from El Vendrell to Barcelona (Montjuïc) and they had a lead of 2.55 with 63kms gone.

With race leader Danny Martin keeping an eye on proceedings, the ten escapers started to be reeled in

Just past the Nou Camp wiith four of the eight laps around the Catalan capital to go, the escapers fractured and the peloton had them in their sights.

Wellens, Lopez Garcia and Thomas De Gendt took over at the front with a lead of 28 seconds with 12kms to go. They were joined by Kiserlovski and Lampre's Michele Scarponi.

Joaquinn Rodriquez, who was seventeen seconds behind Dan Martin, moved up to sixth with nine to go.

With David Lopez Garcia going off on a flyer with just over four to go on Alt De Montjuic, Rodriquez tried to attack but Martin was on his wheel.

Speeds were touching 70kmph. Lopez was ahead of Kiserlovski, De Gendt and Scarponi going under the flam rouge.

It was out of these four who would win the stage and it Thomas De Gendt who won in a time of 2.45.41 beating Kiserlovski in the sprint. Twenty four seconds, Danny Martin came in to win the race and become the second Irishman after Sean Kelly to win the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.

Bradley Wiggins finished fifth overall.
