BMC'S Australian Cadel Evans won the sixth stage of the Tirreno-Adriactico this afternoon.

This was the final road stage before tomorrow's time trial and was 178km long ending up with three laps in Macerata following the departure in Ussita.

Borut Bozic of Vacansoleil and Bert Grabsch of HTC-Highroad were today's escapees and were at one time four minutes clear.

A bit of a crash involving the group containing maglia azzura wearer Cadel Evans with just less than 30kms to go, allowed the escapees to break a bit more and get close to two minutes ahead.

Lampre were on the front chasing the escapees with one circuit to go. With nine kilometres left, Bozic's and Grabsch's day at the front was over and HTC Highroad's Peter Velits went for glory.

Coming up the final hill, Movistar's Angel Ruiz went but in the last few metres he was caught. Scarponi, Nibali and BMC's Cadel Evans all were at the front along with yesterday's winner Phillip Gilbert.

Italian based Evans used his experience to full effect and came from the right to the front and kept going to go over the line to take the victory, ahead of Visconit and Scarponi.

Going into the final time trial tomorrow, Evans has a nine second lead.
