Boonen Wins The Tour Of Belgium Stage Two

Tom Boonen made it two out of two with a win on the second stage of the Baloise Tour Of Belgium.

Steve Cummings of BMC did not start after the Wirral hailing rider broke his elbow on the first stage and Kenny Van Hummel was prevented from taking part in the second stage which was 174kms long and from Lierde to Knokke-Heist.

With an early attack by  De Troyer, Walsleben and Theuns dealt with, Yves Lampaert of Topsport, Marcel Aregger of IAM Cycling, Frederic Amorison of Wallonie and Sascha Weber of Veranclassic formed a break after thirteen kilometres which saw them 3.24 ahead of the peloton which included race leader Tom Boonen of Omega Pharma Quick Step after 46 kilometres.

Lampaert took the primus sprint as the gap steadied at 1.26 with fifty kilometres left to race.

The escapers stayed away until being caught with just over six kilomtres to go and the sprint teams took to the front with Tom Boonen winning the sprint ahead of Omega Pharma Quick Step team mate, Gert Steegmans and Theo Bos, followed by Van Staeyen, Hushovd, Napolitano, Verhelst, Ahlstrand, Senechel and  Lodewyck.

Boonen leads the race by twelve seconds from Theo Bos.
