Team Great Britain failed to collect any gold medals at the opening day of the UCI World Track Cycling Championships in Pruszkow in Poland.

Britain did get two silvers and two bronzes. The silvers came when gold was expected from Northern Ireland's Wendy Houvenagel in the Womens 3000m individual pursuit who was beaten by New Zealander Alison Shanks.

Without Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Staff, Jason Kenny, and Matt Crampton were beaten into second place in the mens team sprint by France.

The two bronzes came from Chris Newton who came third in the points race and Victoria Pendleton in the Womens 500m time trial.

Tomorrow, Mark Cavendish, fresh from his victory in the Milan-San Remo, goes in the Mens Scratch race.
