Cavendish Sixth in The Madison

Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh finished sixth in the Madison at the World Track Cycling Championships in Pruszkow in Poland tonight.

In this long distance 50km track race which lasts an hour, Kennaugh had a bad crash with 58 laps to go when he was taken down by a Colombia rider but with Cavendish getting his foot down, the duo were soon back in the race.



Great Britain, despite the heavy marshalling of Cavendish who won this event in Manchester a year ago, continued to pick up points and moved up to fifth,still a lap down.

Cavendish said to the BBC's Simon Brotherton:"We had a bit of bad luck with the crash but we had controlled the race before that."

Denmark rode well to win the race with Australia second and the Czech Republic getting the Bronze medal with Great Britain finishing sixth with thirteen points.

In the Women's Sprint Final, Victoria Pendleton won a gold medal beating Holland's Willy Kanis 2-1 in races. Pendleton burst in to tears when the result of the photo finish came through.

In the opening stage of the two day Criterium International in France, Britain's Ben Swift was fifth on the 190km stage from Monthois to Charleville to Mézières. Bradley Wiggins finished 75th. The stage was won by Frenchman Jimmy Casper.
