Keeper Woes Cost Sphinx

COVENTRY SPHINX 2-3 WESTFIELDS

Coventry Sphinx were beaten by Wesfields for the second time this season in a bizarre game at Sphinx Drive.

Sphinx had gone into the game with the news that Paul Charnley would not be the manager of next season and with regular keeper Carl O'Neill not well enough to start, reserve team keeper Alan Orth was dragged out of his bed after a night on the tiles to keep goal.

It was Paul Charnley's side who took the lead midway through the 13th minute thanks to a lovely low drive from Luke Hopkins skidding past John Pugh on the turf which was absorbing a mixture of rain and hail.

Their lead was only to last for ninety seconds when Jamie Cuss spotted Orth off his line and from a position level with the centre circle, the midfielder fired a shot which hit the crossbar and bounced down over the line.

Seven minutes later and Jamie Cuss tried his luck again with a lob from twenty yards. Again, this went over Orth's head and much to this dismay of the Sphinx support into the net.

Back came Sphinx and Andy Woodhall who again worked well in midfield, played a neat ball to Jimmy Halton on the right. A peach of a cross was met by the low head of Jerome Murdock and from four yards, Sphinx were back level.

The variations in weather continued and we had the sight of Westfield left back Leon Cook being unable to see as he temporarily blinded by the sun as he attempted a clearance which allowed the ball eventually to run to Robbie Stevenson whose shot from the edge of the area flew just over the bar.

Seconds before half-time, Westfields were back in front. American student Orth dropped the ball from a header and Dan Hill was given the simple task of scoring with the keeper on the deck to put his side ahead at the interval.

It was a lead, they did not lose as Sphinx could not even manage a shot on target in the second half.

Carl O'Neill, who had come on to replace Orth at the break made a splendid double save in the 83rd minute before Sphinx were reduced to ten men when Jerome Murdock was sent off for dissent in the final whistle.

Sphinx travel to Shifnal Town next Saturday.

Coventry Sphinx Reserves were beaten 5-0 at Quorn Reserves in a Midland Combination Reserve team game. Danny McSheffrey'side are at home to Coleshill Town on Tuesday night.
