Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins could not be more happier with the result and the performance from his side's 4-1 win at Brocton.

Hopkins told the Sphinx website:  “Saturday was 100 times better. The attitude in the squad was spot on and I think the couple of bad results had pulled the lads together as a unit. They realised they are all in it together, they are the only ones that can get out of a losing run.

“We also made a few changes to the starting eleven and gave it a fresh sense with players moving about on the pitch to try to get a reaction and it worked.”

Sphinx took the lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time with Ash Jackson converting after Jacob Dodds was tackled in the area.

Hopkins admitted: “We got lucky with some sharp feet from Dodds and the centre half dived in at him, as he had done all afternoon but this time got awarded the pen. Ash Jackson is steady as they come and he put it away and it was 1-0 right at half time. If we look back, we've had the lead at this point in many games and have gone to draw or lose, so the game plan was just to be in the game at sixty minutes then seventy minutes and then look to get the result.”

Sphinx doubled the lead on 52 minutes with a goal from Ashley Cain and Hopkins said: “We came back out and Ash Cain whipped in a corner which went straight in. But then, we conceded straight away which was our only defensive mix up of the day and it was a soft goal to concede. We don’t normally give them away, so it shows how the little mistakes have killed us this season.

Hopkins was impressed with how his side reacted and added: “We didn't let it affect us and went about playing again. "It was not probably as pretty as in other weeks and a little more direct but the result was the end game."

Sphinx’s third goal was scored by Aaron Opoku, who on eighty one minutes scored his first goal for the club and Hopkins commented: “I’m glad Aaron got his goal, he deserved it massively, he was brilliant and I need that week in week out now. That’s his challenge, to finish the season on a high.

The victory was secured in the final minute with a goal from Jackson Downie after coming on as a substitute.

“The lads were all round brilliant on the day," said Hopkins, whose side are at home to Rocester on Saturday. "It was nice to see some players doing jobs and roles for the team and perhaps learning bits and pieces about themselves to become a more complete player."
