CITY SUPPORT
Three of us plus Danny Ireland's dad.

The M6 was its unforgiving self but we got there in plenty of time. £3 for adults and you had to buy a ticket to get in and then hand in said ticket at the only open turnstile in the main stand.

Coventry City Reserves cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win at Shrewsbury Town.

Frankie Bunn and Steve Ogrizovic, fielded a strong team to give the likes of De Zeeuw,Cairo,Davis and Michael Hughes a place in the shop window.

Shrewsbury were forced to field a young team due to a first team game at Morecambe tomorrow.

With the rain having relented,it was a cold night at Oteley Road for those assembled in the Main Stand of this stadium in its first year.

Coventry, who were second going into the game, controlled the opening period. There were trains on a regular basis whizzing past the stand opposite the main stand and inside the ground, the ball was zipping round the greasy surface as City put some good moves together with Lee Hildreth always involved.

In the thirteenth minute, Shrewsbury's only chance of the half came thanks to a cross from the left finding Kalum Evitts on the edge of the area. Danny Ireland spotted it early and made a superb save diving to his left.

It proved to be their only  real chance of the game as De Zeeuw and Hall provided a stonewall defence.

Passes were sprayed round neatly and time and time again, the home side had to chase around as Michael Hughes,Hildreth and Davis kept front pairing supplied.

In the 19th minute, Chris Birchall dived on the edge of the six yard box to get his head  to a Giddings cross. It looked a goal but Shrewsbury keeper Jasbir Singh threw himself to block.

It was Chris Birchall who gave City the lead in the 31st minute after collecting the ball inside the area and from six yards, driving a shot which Singh got a hand to but could not prevent from going into the net.

Birchall was denied by the feet of Singh in City's next attack and then fired wide after a pin point pass from Gary Borrowdale fell to his feet.

City's effort and committment was rewarded in the 43rd minute with another goal.

Lee Hildreth supplied a cross from the right and the youngster whose season has been severely hampered by injuries, hit a right footed volley from twelve yards into the far corner of the net.

Now,earlier in the season,City had been two goals up against Shrewsbury and lost. This time, there was to be no repeat. Arjan De Zeeuw had a 53rd minute header from a Cairo corner cleared off the line and two minutes later, shot just wide from another corner.

In the 59th minute,it was three-nil to the Sky Blues. Gary Borrowdale took the ball from inside his own half, then sped down the left channel before unleashing a shot which flew past the helpless Singh into the far corner of the net with aplomb.

De Zeeuw hit the bar in the 66th minute as the Sky Blue onslaught continued. Now as the ball dropped down, Stuart Giddings who had a solid game fired just wide.

Things went horribly wrong for Giddings when he surged forward in the 73rd minute. He got as far as the Shrews penalty area and suddenly pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury. The right back raised his hand and limped off the pitch in considerable pain and totally grief stricken.

Aaron Griffiths was sent on and was followed by the introduction of Adam Walker four minutes later.

Singh made another good save to deny Michael Hughes who sat all night in front of the back four and controlled the play.

Shrewsbury did give Danny Ireland, two touches of the ball with ten to go, but City continued with their passing, hard work and determination and ran out very worthy winners.
