Danni's Double Keeps Promotion Hopes Alive
Danni Saulter celebrated her first start in a month with a late double against Wolves securing a 2-1 win that sees the Sky Blues regain top spot from the Leicester City Women. Whilst Coventry still don't control their own destiny a draw this evening would've almost certainly handed the Foxes the title.
In a game that had looked destined to finish in a 0-0 draw Saulter appeared to have done enough to hand City all three points when in the 85th minute she latched onto substitute Kirsty O'Sullivan's long through ball and ran on to fire home. Becky Thomas got a hand to the shot but it wasn't enough to stop the ball rolling into the bottom right hand corner and the Sky Blues erupting into jubilant celebrations.
Wolves were not content to roll over and went in search of an equaliser. They wouldn't have to wait long as after 2 minutes of sustained pressure a loose ball from a weak clearance feel to the feet of Sarah Lambeth. The midfielder's shot from almost 25 yards curved low inside the right post through a crowd of players that left City 'keeper Kerry Williamson unsighted.
The Sky Blues had to pick themselves up and go after the win once more. With just 2 minutes remaining Lisa Sharrad charged forward from inside her own half and played an incisive ball through to Saulter who still had plenty to do. The midfielder turned striker side stepped to her right; took a few touches as she travelled to the edge of the box before unleashing a right foot blast that nestled nicely in the bottom left corner this time.
Again Wolves piled on the pressure as they looked for another equaliser but this time City's back line would not be breeched. Wolves' lone striker Anne Johnson had little joy all evening as she was constantly denied by a Sky Blues defence consisting of Captain Natasha Lynch, Kelly Pinner, Jenni Lowe and Lisa Sharred.
Coventry's Midland Women's Combination League winning streak now stands at 13. The last time the Sky Blues dropped points was away at WBA which is where Leicester City Women must go on Sunday as they bid to regain the top spot. Coventry's vastly superior goal difference means that anything less than a victory for the Foxes will hand Coventry control of their own destiny as the countdown to the final game of the season begins.
