Coventry Blaze lost their final league game of the season with a 3-2 defeat at Newcastle Vipers.

At the Metro Arena, Newcastle took a two goal lead midway through the first period thanks to goals from Rob Rankin and Rob Wilson.

Paul Thompson's side had all the play, raining shots on Andrew Verner but it took until 36.39 for Erik Hjalmarsson to find a way through for the Blaze.

Ed Courtney added a third for the Vipers on 41.15 as Blaze continued to attack. With nineteen seconds of the match remaining, Erik Hjalmarsson hit his second of the night but it was not enough to record a 3-2 defeat.

Blaze whose runners up spot in the Elite League table was confirmed with Nottingham's 3-0 defeat at Cardiff face Newcastle away in the Play-Off Quarter-Finals next Saturday with the second game at the Sky Dome on Sunday at 6pm.

Champions Sheffield Steelers won 5-3 at Basingstoke, Cardiff beat Nottingham Panthers 3-0 and Edinburgh Capitals won 8-5 at Hull.

In the Knock Out Cup Final First Leg, Manchester drew 3-3 with Belfast. The game was played as a double header as a league game and over-time was played which saw Manchester win 4-3.
