Blaze Badly Stung By Stingrays

Coventry Blaze were beaten 4-1 at home tonight by Hull Stingrays at the Coventry Sky Dome tonight.

Face off at the Sky Dome was delayed by an accident on the M1 and there was only 15 Hull fans in a half empty Sky Dome.

Hull entered the rink to the classic Sugar Babes song "Here Comes The Girls" and as the sun dropped outside it was Hockey Time.

Coventry Blaze went into the game amidst rumours that they had signed Basingstoke's net minder for next season to replace JF Perras, who has been a disappointment.

Blaze net minder JF Perras

The Ice Hockey community lost one of its own this week with the sad passing of renowned photographer Dave Page. As one, the Arena stood in complete silence as a mark of respect.

Blaze, who need to keep winning to ensure a place in the play-offs, start well but after 1,21, there is another delay as the ice has to be repaired.

An early goal from Sylvain Deschatelets puts the Blaze one-nil up on 3.22 but a mistake by Perras lets in Lee Esders for an equaliser on 8.47.

Despite starting the second period with 5 V 3 for a minute, the Blaze fail to score. With Greg Wood getting more ice than normal, the Blaze enforcer Carlyle Lewis spent most of the first two periods on the bench.

Another mistake by Perras on a Hull power play gives the visitors the lead on 31.26 through Jeff Glowa. A third goal for Hull in the 34th minute is not given after a Hull player was seen punching the puck into the net as the Blaze trail 2-1 at the end of the second.

Adam Calder misses s penalty shot after being tripped when through on goal in the 48th minute. Blaze then go down to three men due to indiscipline especially from Sylvain Deschatelets and then concede a third goal to Pavel Gomenyuk on 50.05.

Coventry pull their net minder with 1.30 left but the plan fails as they concede a fourth goal to Jason Kostadine. As the puck hits the net, it is too much for most Blaze fans as many leave.

The end of match presentation is made in front of only a few hundred fans but the man of the match tonight goes to those fans who stayed to the end.

On Saturday night, the Blaze are at Belfast Giants before facing Edinburgh Capitals at home on Sunday.

Other scores tonight saw Elite League new Champions Sheffield Steelers win 4-1 at Newcastle Vipers. Nottingham Panthers won 7-2 at Basingstoke whilst Edinburgh won 4-3 at Cardiff.

In the Challenge Cup Final 1st Leg, Manchester Phoenix beat Belfast Giants 4-3.
