Ricoh To Stage Cheerleading Contest

The Ricoh Arena will stage the British Cheerleading Association's Internationals 2009 this month.

2,500 cheerleaders are expected in the the cheerleading and dance competition in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26.

Collin Johnson, the secretary of the British Cheerleading Association (BCA), said to the Ricoh Arena website: "The sport is a growing phenomenon. "It is a relatively new sport that youngsters love to do and it is growing an average of 20 per cent per annum.

"There are over 18,500 registered cheerleaders and there are 745 registered clubs with the BCA in the UK.

"This is the first time we will have held the internationals at the Ricoh Arena and as usual the standard is always extremely high.

"The competitors range in ages from five to those in their 20s and there will be qualifying rounds and finals in both individual and team cheer and dance performances.

"The panel of American judges will be watching up to 150 routines each day as the awards and trophies are decided.

"The cheerleading World Championships are held every year and this year and next year it is taking place in Florida. In conjuction with the International Cheer Union (ICU) and as part of the national governing body of cheerleading (SportCheerGB), the BCA is maximising its efforts in helping to host the Worlds in London in 2012 so this is a really exciting time for the sport.

"The BCA is also looking to host a new UK championships next year which will be open to all squads and teams and is aimed at not only finding the best squads in the UK but also to show the world we have teams and individuals over here with the skills and ability that can compete at any level."

Chris Owen, event planner at the Ricoh Arena, said this was the first cheerleading event the venue has hosted.
